Power Words

Updated on April 18, 2022

Words are power.  Since we are coming up on Mother’s Day, I always think about what my mom has taught me and one piece of excellent advice that “once you say something, you can’t take it back.”  Now, this runs along the lines of “if you can’t say something nice, then say nothing at all.”

And in this day and age, it seems that more people should take that advice, whether it be in person or online.

Thoughts are powerful and words are, too. I love words and being a songwriter for all these years has deepened my love affair with them..their origin, how they “sing” in a line, how they rhyme and how they make a listener feel.

  • What words engage your mind, heart and soul to create?
  • What words are confident boosters to you?
  • Why do they have meaning to you and how have your power words changed over time?

How do you use powerful words to inspire others in your work and daily life? Gratitude to those around you is one of the most powerful ways to empower and inspire. They also give both you and the receiver great joy! Expressing gratitude is pure thoughtfulness, creates a feeling of validation, and above all nurtures the receiver in a way that is so simple.

In my last article, “HerStory,” I wrote about how others impact our lives and how we are all “writing” our own story. I asked the question, what will your story say about you as a creative person? And now I’m asking, what power words will define you, how you live your life, and encourage others to find their own power words?

This past week I was shooting video for my online course, “Spark Your Creativity:The Steps to a Successful Creative Journey.” I interviewed people that I met in downtown Nashville about how creativity showed up in their lives. I finished each interview with the question, “what is your power word?” Most people quickly exclaimed their word and why it meant so much to them.

I recently had a colleague ask me to tell them 5 words that were my power words. I love this!

Here’s my list:

  • Inspiring
  • Energetic
  • Spontaneous
  • Passionate
  • Curious

So I am asking you, dear reader and fellow creative, what are YOUR power words?  This is a chance to think of 5 words that define you, move you and excite you. (You may only have 1 or 2, and of course you can add to this list!)

I think once you get started on your list, it will be hard to stop at just 5….

I would love to hear what power words you have chosen, please share them so I can pass them along to my other readers.

Whatever you do, stay inspired!
