Cosmetic Dentistry: What Are Its Limits?

Updated on April 24, 2026

Cosmetic dentistry has dramatically evolved over the years. From minimal-prep veneers and 3D-printed dental crowns to gum contouring via laser reshaping and dental implants, modern dentistry has shown improvements we never thought we’d see coming in the past.

While we have come a long way in the world of cosmetic dentistry, there are still limitations that exist, including the following.

Tooth Enamel Regeneration

Today, tooth enamel erosion is still considered permanent and, thus, not able to be regenerated. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Not only is tooth enamel not able to be rebuilt by the body, but modern dentistry has yet to find a way to replicate the exact crystal structure and mineral organization of genuine enamel.

While dentists today are unable to regenerate tooth enamel, they can assist in the early repair of enamel deterioration through remineralization. This can be done via varnish treatments or remineralizing pastes.

Permanent Teeth Whitening

Modern cosmetic dentistry in Turkey has brought several in-office and over-the-counter teeth whitening options to help brighten a dull or discolored smile. From professional bleaching and laser whitening to at-home LED kits and whitening strips or pens, achieving a whiter smile is easier than it was in the past.

However, permanent teeth whitening is not yet an option. Because even whitened teeth are still prone to staining over time, and the enamel is naturally porous and non-regenerating, it’s not possible for teeth whitening treatment to offer permanent results at this time. If patients want long-term results, they will have to continue getting whitening treatment.

Bite Correction Without Orthodontic Appliances

Orthodontics has improved substantially since it first started. We’ve traded bulky headgear for appliances that are barely noticeable, like bonded brackets, lingual braces, and even invisible aligners.

If you’re wanting a way to fix your bite or crooked teeth without the need for orthodontic appliances, that isn’t an option at this time. However, with orthodontic devices getting smaller, lighter, and less noticeable over the decades, wearing these appliances in the future will likely be even more discreet and comfortable.

Gum Disease Cure

Gum disease is a chronic infection in the mouth that progresses through stages. Due to its ability to permanently alter tissue, its effects on the immune system, and how quickly bacteria can recolonize, gum disease can’t be cured. Although, it can be controlled, especially if caught in an earlier stage.

Today, dentists can perform deep cleanings, provide antibacterial treatments, and cosmetic procedures like gum grafting to aid with the progression and appearance of gum disease. Researchers are looking for ways to eventually regenerate the gums and potentially reverse gum disease in the future. For now, the focus is on better treatments and faster detection.

Conclusion

The evolution of cosmetic dentistry has been impressive, even just over the past few decades. Nonetheless, we still have a way to go before we’re capable of resolving some of the most common dental problems once and for all. Think tooth enamel regeneration, permanent teeth whitening, a cure for gum disease, and the ability to correct one’s bite without orthodontics.
