A physician’s office calls to remind a patient about an upcoming appointment. A pharmacy reaches out to confirm that a prescription is ready. A hospital follows up after a recent discharge. These are routine, important calls, but increasingly, they are going unanswered.
It is a crisis of trust that has quietly taken root across the communications landscape, one that the healthcare industry is only beginning to fully reckon with.
The rise of scam calls, robocalls, and number spoofing has conditioned Americans to treat unknown or unrecognized phone numbers as threats. More than half of Americans know someone who has been the victim of an imposter scam and lost money as a result. Thirty-four percent say they themselves have fallen victim. In this environment, patients are not just skeptical of unfamiliar numbers; they are actively screening them out.
The Spoofing Problem Is Getting Worse
Number spoofing where fraudsters disguise their calls to appear as though they are coming from a trusted source, including legitimate healthcare providers, has exploded in recent years.
AI is accelerating the problem. Sophisticated voice cloning and AI-generated scam calls are becoming increasingly difficult for consumers to identify. As these tools become more accessible, the volume and convincingness of fraudulent calls are only expected to grow, putting pressure on legitimate healthcare communicators to find ways to distinguish themselves as legitimate businesses trying to reach their customers rather than bad actors trying to scam them.
When patients receive a fraudulent call, they typically do not blame the fraudster; they, more than likely, blame the hospital or who they perceive to be said hospital. That erodes trust, damages reputation, and makes it even harder for the legitimate healthcare provider to reach that patient in the future.
Compounding the problem is call spoofing, whereby fraudsters hijack legitimate healthcare providers’ phone numbers – using them to place calls without the knowledge or consent of the actual organization. The real healthcare provider has no idea that their phone number is being weaponized: no alert or mechanism to detect it. By the time patients start associating that number with scam calls, the damage is done, and the legitimate business bears the reputational cost of activity it never authorized and couldn’t see.
The Stakes Are Higher in Healthcare
In most industries, a missed call means a missed sale. In healthcare, a missed call can mean not receiving timely information on a diagnosis, prescription, test result, or follow-up appointment. The impact is personal.
The communication breakdown between healthcare providers and patients could have real clinical consequences. Appointment no-shows, medication non-adherence and gaps in post-discharge follow-up are persistent challenges in healthcare already so when the trusted business to consumer (B2C) channel is broken, the problem is further exacerbated because that important connection and engagement points are interrupted.
Phone Number Intelligence as a Solution
The good news is that the same data and intelligence infrastructure that underlies modern telecommunications can be used to help healthcare organizations reclaim trust in their outbound communications.
Phone number intelligence is the ability to verify call origination, monitor how numbers are labeled across networks and signal verified identity to recipients; it gives healthcare organizations tools to address the trust gap directly.
At its core, this approach works in three ways.
First, verifying call origination helps ensure that outbound calls from a healthcare organization are confirmed as legitimate before they reach the patient. This validation process can prevent fraudsters from successfully impersonating phone numbers, which can help protect the patient as well as the organization’s reputation.
Second, reputation monitoring gives healthcare organizations visibility into how their numbers are labeled across carrier networks. If a number has been flagged as spam whether due to fraudulent activity or high call volume, healthcare providers can now have visibility into the issue and take corrective action before it further erodes patient engagement.
Third, displaying verified identity on outbound calls helps patients immediately recognize who is calling. When patients see a verified name on their screen rather than an unknown number, they are more likely to answer. For healthcare organizations, that moment of recognition can be the difference between a connected patient and a missed interaction.
Building a Foundation of Trust
Healthcare has always been built on trust. Patients share their most sensitive information and their most consequential decisions with their healthcare providers. That trust extends to every interaction, including a phone call.
When patients can no longer distinguish a legitimate call from their healthcare provider from a scam, that foundational trust is at risk. Healthcare organizations that take proactive steps to verify and protect their outbound communications are not just solving a technology problem; they are also reinforcing the credibility of every conversation they have with patients.
An unanswered call from a healthcare provider is not a missed metric – it is a breakdown in the care relationship. Restoring patient trust in something as basic as a phone call requires intentionality. Fortunately, the tools exist. Healthcare providers that act now are not just solving an operational problem; they are protecting the core B2C communications channel through which care is delivered.
