Thesis Writing Skills: My experience

Updated on February 13, 2020

If you rate me for undergraduate, master’s and doctoral dissertations, I will score 85 for PhD, 65 for Master and 20 for Undergraduate. Although the three papers were considered excellent papers among the students at the time, they were judged high or low when they were put together. The undergraduate thesis was written for a week because it was in Chinese and not very demanding, but it was bound for more than 100 pages. The master’s thesis was written for one month. I remember that I was soaked every day in the library of my campus. The final thesis was nearly 300 pages. The longest doctoral dissertation is written, about 3 months, but these three months are written after working hours. Every day I can go home to coax my daughter to write 2 hours, so the total time is similar to that of the campus. However, the quality of doctoral dissertations is the highest, the ideas are the most mature, and the articles are the most published. Not much nonsense, summarize the skills of thesis writing.

Writing a dissertation is a systematic project, not the same as writing a paper, so from the beginning, you must have a holistic thinking and plan, such as document management, document indexing, data management, form picture management, and so on. It is recommended to create a folder from the beginning, which contains sub-folders in various aspects, divided into categories, system management, and do more with less.

Writing in one go. Seeing many people write dissertations, I wrote half a page today, and hundreds of words tomorrow. It was extremely painful. It is better to think before writing, to clarify your thoughts, and then to write. Sometimes the writing is smooth, and it is not surprising to write a paper in a day or two.

Don’t expect a final draft. The most important thing in writing a dissertation is the first draft, because it is the most difficult to develop from scratch. After the first draft is published, it is not difficult to revise it, no matter how sharp and varied the amendments. As the saying goes, a hundred steels are made, and the same is true of the papers. Often the final draft is always beyond recognition compared to the first draft. So, for the first draft, be fast, not fine.

Don’t rush to generate a bibliography literature list. Because once this document list is inserted, it will always be updated over and over again when it is changed, and sometimes the word will crash, resulting in improper preservation or loss of the paper. If you use software such as endnote, when writing, use {author name, year and other information} in the place where you insert the document, and finally generate a list together.

The thesis of paper and paper is still different. For the thesis, refining is not the most important requirement, detailed and most important. For paper, refining is the most important, because magazines often have word limit and refined text will be more favored by magazines. Therefore, when writing a thesis, you must strive to be exhaustive, especially the first draft, which can be slightly deleted when revised later.

You will always find that word “goes wrong” from time to time. For example, why the directory format is always wrong, why the directory “only update page number” option is missing, how to insert the page number on the left on the horizontal page, how to customize the page number of the footer, how to distinguish between inserting page breaks and section breaks, and so on. Remember, once you encounter a similar problem, you should figure it out and resolve it as soon as possible. It’s not that the Word design is problematic, it’s that you won’t use it yet. Most of the time, searching the Internet for best research paper writing service will solve the problem. This way these problems will not bother you later.
