Becoming a Better Healthcare Practitioner

Updated on May 6, 2021

Working in the health sector can be incredibly rewarding, especially when you know you have given all you can to improve the lives and welfare of others. Even with that positivity, the work you do can be incredibly challenging, especially if there are days where you do not get time to take adequate, or any, breaks. On top of this, those who work as self-employed healthcare workers, or in smaller businesses, might also need to find a way to balance other tasks, such as administrative work, alongside their work with clients.

Using Intuitive Software Systems

One of the first ways you can help yourself to improve as a practitioner, and free up a bit of time, is to consider the systems that you use. Rather than needing to spend hours filling in a number of forms relating to work and working protocols, you might instead want to consider an HR system that manages employees, policies, and procedures, without the need for a person to be manning it at all times. This means that all onboarding, vacation requests, and reasons for absences can instead be uploaded onto a singular secure system, removing the need for both managers and team members to need to further free up their time to handwrite forms or attend meetings. Likewise, the ability to update company policies and procedures on a yearly basis can then be further streamlined, allowing you, and the rest of the team, to get back to helping the clients themselves.

Take Extra Training

Changes in regulations or working practices may sometimes mean that your current working knowledge might be outdated. Alongside this, there is usually more that can be learned. This further education can not only help you become a better healthcare practitioner who is more competent and confident in their work, but may also allow you to partake in different procedures, such as the administration of medication, or even positively affect your pay grade. On top of this, extra training can look great when it comes to in-house promotions, or even when applying for a new role.

Consider Your Own Health

For you to really be able to help others, you must also monitor and manage your own health. Some parts of your role may be incredibly stressful, which can have a negative effect on your mental health. Also, in busy periods, you may not have the opportunity to take breaks or eat lunch. Keeping your nutritional intake as regular and healthy as possible can be vital to helping you maintain energy throughout the duration of your shifts, as well as to increase your own immune system, making it less likely for you to contract illness. Making time each day to consider your mental and physical health, and taking steps to improve these, can then allow you to better serve others.

By considering the best ways to improve how you look after yourself and others, as well as to make your work that bit more efficient, you may be able to become a better healthcare practitioner. As someone who has a lot of compassion and time for others, it is important to also show that same time and compassion for yourself.
