Amwell Expands Leadership Team with Appointment of Dr. Carrie Nelson as Chief Medical Officer

Amwell®, a digital care delivery leader, has named Dr. Carrie Nelson as its new Chief Medical Officer. In this role, Dr. Nelson will focus on empowering provider and payer organizations as they seek to achieve greater clinical, operational, and financial outcomes through digital care delivery powered by Converge™, Amwell’s enterprise-grade infrastructure software platform. Dr. Nelson will also be responsible for leading clients in their improvement of population health in today’s new era of hybrid healthcare and will have clinical oversight of healthcare professionals practicing on behalf of Amwell clinical partner, the Amwell Medical Group.

“We are honored to welcome Carrie to our executive team. Her experience as a physician and her impressive background in value-based care and focus on driving health outcomes and risk management for large provider organizations, make her the right person to extend our clinical vision,” said Kurt Knight, Chief Operating Officer, Amwell. “Carrie’s clinical perspective will be crucial to the continued sales and implementation of our infrastructure software, which provides the engine to connect and empower healthcare organizations as they pursue their digital care delivery aspirations. Carrie will help our customers define new standards of care, drive important quality metrics, and achieve efficiencies, while enhancing patient and provider experiences across the care continuum.”

Dr. Nelson joins Amwell from Advocate Aurora Health where she most recently served as Senior Vice President and CMO for Population Health and Health Outcomes. She also served as the Chief Clinical Officer for Advocate Physician Partners, a benchmark organization known internationally for delivering value-based care in collaboration with about 5000 employed and independent physician practices. With more than 28 years’ experience as a Family Medicine provider, Dr. Nelson is an innovative physician leader with a proven track record in the fields of quality improvement, patient safety and population health. Having served on the board and as president of the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians, she has been a leader at the national level, has chaired the American Academy of Family Physicians Commission on Science and Health of the Public, and has regularly engaged in influencing healthcare policy.

“As a physician, I am passionate about improving patient care and have a deep understanding of the unique challenges that care teams face every day. These challenges have only worsened following the pandemic, and I believe that technology has the power to improve outcomes and address the retention and burnout crisis currently facing our healthcare system,” said Dr. Nelson. “I am excited to have the opportunity to help deliver on Amwell’s vision for empowering digital care delivery, as we work to enable an integrated experience across a full spectrum of physical, virtual and automated care – and make it easier for healthcare organizations to achieve their digital care delivery goals.”
