Types of braces and teeth straightening options

Updated on March 15, 2022

Many people are not happy with their smiles and seek improvement by undergoing cosmetic dentistry like teeth straightening. Lack of proper teeth alignment causes unhappiness because it can affect the way you smile, and the remedy is to consult a dentist of the Austin Dental Specialty Group who can suggest the way to set your teeth right. After the treatment, you get back the coveted smile that had eluded you for years. Teeth straightening is one of the orthodontic treatments that improve your smile and reduce tooth wear, improve your bite, and dental hygiene.

Your dentist will tell you about the options available for teeth straightening, and the selection will depend on the condition of your teeth alignment, aesthetics, and budget. Braces are the only prosthetic used for teeth straightening, and it comes in various materials and types.

Ceramic braces

The main concern about braces is that it is unsightly, that seems quite an obstruction and draws everybody’s attention.  Ceramic braces are suitable for creating a less noticeable appearance but an effective teeth straightening method for older teens and young adults. Compared to traditional metal braces, ceramic braces are less noticeable due to their tooth-colored brackets and wires of the same color. The braces can effectively put pressure on the teeth to make them move and acquire the proper position for perfect alignment.

Inside (lingual) braces

Since the visibility of braces is a concern, one way to conceal the braces is to use Lingual braces that sit on the inside surfaces of the teeth and are custom made. The braces are made according to your teeth’ contours to ensure that it is comfortable and practical. However, it takes some time to get used to the braces that touch the tongue often.  It might even impact your speech and eating since it comes in direct touch with the parts of your mouth.

Clear aligners

The latest generation of braces is entirely invisible and made from synthetic material. The braces sit between the gaps in the teeth and remain invisible but constructed so that it applies controlled pressure on the teeth. However, the clear aligners can treat only less severe orthodontic problems. Besides being invisible, the clear aligners are removable like dentures which allow maintaining proper oral hygiene. You can remove it while brushing and clean the aligners separately before wearing it again. However, constant wearing is necessary with fewer removals for effective results.

Metal braces

These traditional braces used to be common sight a few decades ago until the new braces hit the market. Meant for kids and teens and applicable for adults, metal braces are much more affordable and suit those who have a tight budget. The prosthetic consists of small brackets attached to the teeth and connected with one another with a thin wire. The dentist might adjust the braces’ pressure at regular intervals or advice changing the braces as deemed fit.

Although patients of all ages can go for teeth straightening, doing it early gives better results.
