The Challenges Of Clinical Studies

Updated on May 26, 2020

For better or for worse, it isn’t easy for your medication to pass through clinical studies. The pharmaceutical industry is highly regulated and if there is anything that appears to be “off” with your pharmaceutical drug, then the whole clinical study could be shut down.

No doubt that by the time your medication has made it to the clinical study trial that your company has already spent a lot of money and time in an attempt to bring your medication to market.

It is understandable that there are a lot of challenges with clinical studies because if a drug is passed that has an error within it, then that drug could bring a lot of harm to many people who end up taking it.

Continue reading to see what some of the main challenges are with getting a drug to pass its clinical trials.

Precision In All Metrics

Before the drug makes it to the clinical study portion, the creators of the drug had very precise instructions for how the drug should be made, and then even more precise instructions for how the drug should be consumed. To truly know if a drug is going to have the intended medical causes, precision must be used across all metrics in the clinical trial.

This is why, within clinical studies drug manufacturers, supply vendors, and healthcare practitioners must all follow any of the necessary instructions for the drugs that are going through testing. They’re in charge of making sure that all of the participants who take the drug are doing so in the proper fashion. Even if a participant misses one or two doses of the drug, it could throw off the results of the clinical trial that is taking place.

Additionally, health practictioners are responsible for keeping take of the which participants are taking a placebo and which ones are taking the actual drug itself. If the two different kinds of participants are mixed up, then it will result in dire consequences for the outcome of the drug trial.

The health practitioners will also need to keep a sharp eye on any of the participants to make sure that none of them begin to have negative side effects. As soon as a participant begins to have an adverse reaction to the drug, they should be pulled from the study.

The Timing Of The Study

Another challenge that can arise from a clinical trial is the amount of time it can take for a study to finish. Many clinical studies for new kinds of medical treatment, will take months, if not years, for there to be enough results for the doctors running the trial to decide that the drug can finally make it onto the market.

Participants dropping out of the study along the way is also an issue with long running studies, so health providers need to check in with participants on a regular basis.
