Derry brings extensive rural health background and financial expertise to support mission-driven growth

Sandhills Medical, a quality-award-winning Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in South Carolina, recently announced the appointment of Joe Derry as Chief Financial Officer. As CFO, Derry will oversee financial operations, grant compliance, revenue cycle management, and long-term financial planning. His work will be instrumental to the organization’s mission of expanding access to care and deepening its impact for underserved communities.

“My personal mission has always been to make a difference for those around me, and there is no better place to do that than in community health,” said Derry. “Sandhills Medical is committed to providing high-quality care to patients regardless of their ability to pay. I am here to make sure we maintain a strong financial foundation to do that sustainably. I look forward to being part of this growing team and helping Sandhills grow.”

Derry joins Sandhills following nearly a decade as Chief Financial Officer of CommuniHealth Services, a not-for-profit community health center in Louisiana, where he directed a $21 million annual budget and a 200-person staff. During his tenure, he led financial efforts that secured $14 million in New Market Tax Credit financing for a new primary care facility. Derry holds an MBA in Finance and brings a deep understanding of grant compliance, federal funding requirements, and the operational and cultural challenges unique to rural providers and FQHCs.

“Today, 65% of the patients in Sandhills service area are either uninsured or on Medicaid and 85% live at or below 200% of the federal poverty line,” says Amanda Duke, CEO of Sandhills Medical. “Our organization’s financial resilience is directly tied to both care access and patient outcomes. Joe’s strong background in achieving fiscal sustainability for mission-driven organizations is exactly what we need to continue the important work of expanding access and serving the communities who need us most.”
