Paytient Welcomes Dr. Trent Haywood as Chief Outcomes Officer

Updated on August 2, 2025

Paytient recently announced a significant expansion of its leadership team, as its longtime advisor, Dr. Trent Haywood, steps into a new full-time role as its Chief Outcomes Officer. Dr. Haywood has been an invaluable part of the Paytient journey for several years, and they are incredibly excited to welcome his unparalleled expertise and vision to daily operations.

Dr. Haywood’s career has been consistently defined by a commitment to improving a patient’s ability to access and afford high quality healthcare. His distinguished background includes serving as Chief Medical Officer of the Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Association and President of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Institute, where he spearheaded initiatives to enhance population health.

Prior to that, he was the Chief Medical Officer of Vizient and the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). In late 2019, Dr. Haywood founded KNOWALITY LLC, a venture services firm dedicated to accelerating the market adoption of innovative healthcare services and products that improve health outcomes. He continues to serve patients as a practicing internal medicine doctor.

As Chief Outcomes Officer, Dr. Haywood lends expertise that will produce economic and clinical value for patients, employers, health plans, and partners of Paytient. Given the rise in alternative health plans, high deductible health plans, and out-of-pocket costs, healthcare is at an inflection point where most first-dollar decisions will be made by patients. Dr. Haywood’s patent-award winning experience in leveraging data for healthcare decisions will enhance choices at the point of service. The timing could not be more prescient to align data and decisions to drive more access that yields better outcomes at lower costs.

“From my CMS, Vizient, and Blue Cross days, I’ve consistently stated health care is a social practice of one set of people coming together to help another set of people in their time of need,” Dr. Haywood shared. “With that perspective, it’s preordained that I would be drawn to the mission and vision of Paytient. After years of advising this incredible team, I’m thrilled to join their mission full time as we work to improve patient care through incredibly impactful access and affordability solutions.”

Dr. Haywood will raise awareness of market opportunities that yield better results with lower opportunity cost. By giving voice to its insights, driving thought leadership, contributing to leading publications, and engaging with stakeholders on the evolving dynamics of health finance, Dr. Haywood will ensure visibility in a rapid cost-shifting environment. For partners, this means a new, influential perspective on how to create economic value and improve health access, potentially opening doors for collaborative initiatives and deeper market penetration.

He will also be instrumental in the analysis and communication of the impact of Paytient’s innovative solutions as they create tangible value for clients and prospective partners. By leveraging his clinical and industry expertise, Dr. Haywood will help demonstrate how its platform not only empowers patients but also generates significant savings and efficiencies for health plans and employers.

In essence, Dr. Haywood’s role is designed to bridge the gap between clinical excellence and financial innovation, ensuring Paytient’s solutions continue to meet the complex needs of the healthcare ecosystem while delivering superior results for all stakeholders. This new role further positions him to be a central figure in conversations around improving healthcare access, affordability, and the dignity of the patient experience.

“Trent has been a guiding light for Paytient for years, offering invaluable insights and challenging us to think even bigger about the impact we can have,” said Paytient’s CEO Brian Whorley. “His decision to become our Chief Outcomes Officer marks a pivotal moment for our company. His deep understanding of the intricacies of the healthcare system, coupled with his unwavering commitment to the patient, will be absolutely critical as we continue to innovate and expand our reach. With Trent on our team, we are even better positioned to drive meaningful change in how people access and pay for healthcare, ultimately leading to better outcomes for everyone.”
