Everyone feels lonely some of the time. They might not be able to see their friends and family or even get in touch with them because they’re busy, for example. Most of the time, however, this passes, and they find comfort in their loved ones again. 

However, some people are chronically lonely and feel horribly isolated at all times. This is prevalent in older people who have retired and no longer see work colleagues and whose families have grown up and have their own lives to lead, potentially far away. You might assume that the modern age, with its reliance on technology, means that you can always be in contact with numerous people, and therefore that loneliness wouldn’t be a problem. The truth is that it is this very technology that is causing the problem, among other things. 

When it comes to technology, it can give people the false feeling that you don’t have to be close to friends and family because you can always be in touch electronically. Loneliness has also been linked to an increased chance of cognitive decline in conditions such as dementia. It can cause problems with sleep, eating properly, and feelings of self-worth. What Can You Do?

There are a number of things you can do to combat loneliness, and it will depend on you personally as well as your specific situation as to what might be best.
