Perimeter Medical Imaging AI announced today that CHRISTUS St. Vincent is the first hospital in New Mexico to use the company’s S-Series OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) technology to visualize tissue margins in the operating room. CHRISTUS St. Vincent offers the only Commission on Cancer (CoC) accredited breast cancer program in northern New Mexico.
“This evidence-based OCT technology helps me enhance my practice of using multiple tools in the operating room to help ensure that my patients have the best possible outcome,” said Dr. Amani Jambhekar, a surgical breast oncologist at CHRISTUS St. Vincent who leads a multidisciplinary team providing care for breast cancer and melanoma, as well as a high-risk breast clinic.
Traditional technologies used in the operating room such as X-ray, ultrasound or MRI don’t have the resolution to see disease at the cellular level. As a result, surgeons must wait up to 10 days for pathology results to either confirm clean margins or show positive margins, which often result in patients returning for another procedure.
The S-Series OCT uses light to create cross-sectional 3D images of tissue microstructures at 10 times the resolution of ultrasound and X-ray and 100 times the power of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). With the ability to see down to 2 mm in ducts, vessels and glands in the operating room, surgeons can get real-time clarity on margins, giving them the insight they need to help make the best surgical decisions for their patients and feel more confident in their outcomes.
“Our flagship Perimeter S-Series OCT at CHRISTUS St. Vincent advances the company’s long-standing goal of expanding patient access to our cutting-edge technologies, offering the potential for improved patient outcomes and reduced healthcare costs to all communities,” said Perimeter CEO Adrian Mendes. “In partnership with strong patient advocate surgeons, such as Dr. Jambhekar and the team at CHRISTUS St. Vincent, we’re helping to ensure that patients can benefit from our ultra-high-resolution medical imaging technology for margin visualization right in the operating room, in real time.”
