The practice of the founder of a large dental clinic BelaDent in Tbilisi, Teona Margvelani, shows how the personal responsibility of a doctor and comprehensive patient management give patients a happy life and set the international standards

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 3.5 billion people worldwide suffer from oral diseases. Therefore, the global dental services market continues to grow steadily in 2026: Fortune Business Insights estimates that its volume has reached $471 billion, and by 2034, it may exceed $1.1 trillion, demonstrating steady growth of almost 12% annually. The orthodontics segment is growing, driven by patient preference for long-term, comprehensive aesthetic and functional rehabilitation solutions. Georgia is strengthening its medical tourism appeal, with patients from Europe, the USA, and CIS increasingly choosing Tbilisi for comprehensive dental care due to its combination of quality, technology, and cost. In this competitive market, a doctor’s expertise is a clinic’s main advantage.

Teona Margvelani, an orthodontist and general dentist with more than 25 years of experience, Honorary member of GSPI (Georgian Society of Periodontology and Implantology) and GOA (Georgian Orthodontics Association), is the Clinical Director and co-founder of the BelaDent Clinic in Tbilisi. Unlike most specialists working in a narrow field, Margvelani has built her practice on a multidisciplinary approach, combining orthodontics, therapeutic, and orthopedic dentistry. This format allows her to fully accompany the patient, from diagnosis to final aesthetic rehabilitation.

Over the years of practice, she has not only formed a stable clinical base but also turned BelaDent into a clinic with a high reputation, working with large insurance companies and international patients. Her patients include representatives of business, media, and public figures, and a significant portion of new referrals are generated through recommendations, which is one of the key indicators of trust in the medical field. This article is about how a personal professional philosophy can make patients happy and transform into a sustainable medical model that is in demand in a growing market and competition.

When a complex case becomes a point of expertise growth

Teona Margvelani’s work is based on her own principle, which she formulates as: “The Integrated Preventive Orthodontic model is a patient-centered, multidisciplinary approach that combines orthodontics, prevention, and early diagnosis into a single clinical strategy.”

This is an approach in which the doctor does not treat a single problem, but immediately builds a strategy for the entire treatment, with the expectation of a long-term result. This is especially evident in difficult cases. For example, one of the patients applied after several clinics refused her treatment. She was missing several teeth, and one canine had not erupted and was located inside the gum. In standard practice, this almost always means implantation or surgical intervention.

Teona Margvelani chose a different path. With the help of orthodontic treatment, she managed to gradually bring this tooth into the correct position and restore the dentition without removal and complex surgery.

In situations like this, it’s important not to take the most obvious route, but to seek a solution that preserves the patient’s own tissue and causes them the least amount of discomfort. In a desperate situation and in a difficult emotional state, she turned to me, and I developed the treatment plan. As a treatment method, I chose a bracket system, performed a retentive canine and placed it in the correct position,” Teona comments.

As a result, the patient retained her own teeth and received a full functional and aesthetic result. This attitude shows that the key factor is the doctor’s ability to see the whole picture and make decisions based on the future outcome. This is what increasingly determines the patient’s choice today, especially in conditions where not just treatment, but its quality and durability come to the fore.

This approach to clients has made Teona’s clinic one of the best in Georgia, and this is confirmed by the fact that famous actors, politicians, media personalities, and businessmen are among the patients, as well as the return of clients, some of whom have been treated at this clinic for 20 years.

From individual practice to the clinic as a system

Teona Margvelani’s long-term clinical experience has become the basis for the development of BelaDent, a private dental clinic where she has been clinical director and co-founder since 2007.

The key feature of the clinic is both the technology and the level of service and the approach to treatment: the patient’s case is considered as a single system. The work of Teona and the BelaDent team is based on this principle.

For me, a clinic is a system where every case should be managed to achieve the best possible outcome, even when initial conditions are limited. My many years of experience have helped me establish the principle of “one patient, one doctor”, which is why patients trust me and keep coming back to my clinic time and time again,” Teona commented.

This way, the case of a patient with severe malocclusion has become one of the most difficult for Teona and her clinic. Since childhood, the patient has been undergoing treatment, but to no avail: the problem remained unresolved, and the situation was complicated by the fact that at her age, correct treatment already required surgical intervention. At the same time, the family categorically refused the operation. In such conditions, standard protocols practically do not work. However, Teona has built a comprehensive treatment plan, combining orthodontics, psychotherapy, and periodontics. For almost two years, Teona has been undergoing treatment under constant supervision, including X-ray diagnostics and step-by-step correction.

As a result, it was possible not only to significantly improve the bite but also to restore the aesthetics of the teeth. It is precisely such cases that formed the basis of the model of the Teona Margvelani clinic: here, treatment is not divided among narrow specialists without a single strategy; it is built as a single process with control of the result at each stage. This approach helped the clinic to gather a large base of famous clients.

A valuable practice for the community

The influence and experience of Teona Margvelani lies wider than in the successful implementation of clinical practice. She sees herself as a mentor and actively transmits knowledge to the younger generation of doctors. For several years, BelaDent Clinic served as an affiliated residency training base of Tbilisi State Medical University, where Teona Margvelani was actively involved in the supervision of residents. As part of this work, she trained young professionals, supervised their practice, and evaluated the results, forming quality standards for a new generation of doctors. Her expertise is also evident in regular consultations and participation in clinical consultations, where she acts as a second opinion specialist in complex cases.

Margvelani’s public activism is becoming another element of professional influence: in 2026, she was invited to the medical television program “Mkurnali”, where she talked about multidisciplinary approaches in dentistry and their role in improving the quality of treatment. Moreover, her approach was recognized at the “Med Award”, where she won in the categories “Leader and Innovator in Orthodontic Practice and Clinical Management” and Bela Dent  clinic was honored with an award “Special Contribution to the Development of Modern Dentistry”. Regular participation in international conferences and training in new technologies allows her to integrate global standards into local practice, which is especially important for the medical tourism-oriented market.

Moreover, over the years, Teona has regularly attended international congresses and conferences in various countries around the world, and has also been a participant of the Great New York Dental Meeting three times.

However, the ultimate measure of an expert’s caliber remains recognition from colleagues around the world – results that stand the test of time and independent evaluation.

For me, the main criterion of quality is not the immediate result, but how it holds up after 10-15 years and how other colleagues evaluate it,” Teona Margvelani noted.

One such case involves a patient for whom Teona placed veneers over 15 years ago. During that time, she lived in the U.S. and underwent regular checkups with local specialists. American doctors noted the aesthetics, the quality of the work, and the condition of the roots – not a single tooth required retreatment, even after many years. “When the patient wanted to refresh her smile, we conducted a digital assessment and determined that all her teeth were in excellent condition; we will only be replacing her veneers.”

The experience of Teona Margvelani shows that it is a multidisciplinary approach, personalized patient management, and continuous development of expertise that make it possible to create a practice that is in demand in the context of growing competition and globalization of medical services. Modern dentistry is no longer a set of separate procedures and is becoming part of a broader system, where not only technology plays a key role, but also the doctor’s way of thinking. Nowadays, patients worldwide are increasingly looking to international standards and comparing the quality of care across countries, which is why these kinds of cases have become a key factor in building trust for a doctor. Teona Margvelani successfully proves her expertise, which is why she is being sought in the modern realities of greater fragmentation in the medical market.
