Updated on December 12, 2019

Being a sports massage therapist sounds like a fun job. It can give you a chance to be helpful, meet a lot of new talented people and even travel the world. Also, who wouldn’t like to go to the Olympic games?

As you can understand, this career path can offer you so much! On the other hand, you should remember that it’s not as romantic as you think it is. Here are some things to consider when choosing sports massage therapy as your future career:

Education

The good news is that you will not have to spend thousands of pounds to learn massage techniques. There are a lot of affordable massage training courses where you can learn basic medical terminology, body mechanics, massage ethics, anatomy, physiology.

There are a lot of different massage directions. If you want to become a professional massage therapist, make sure to learn as much as possible. There are tons of online resource hubs, like Kenhub that should help you get a grasp of everything anatomy-related. Learning about muscles specifically, will help further your knowledge of the human body and make your path to becoming a professional massage therapist that much easier.

Work experience

Keep in mind that completing a course and getting a certificate will not allow you to work with professional athletes. Before you find your dream job, you should gain relevant job experience. To do so, you can work in nursing houses, hotels, cruise ships, fitness clubs, beauty salons, and recreational facilities.

Also, consider working for yourself as a sports massage therapist. You will be able to choose your workplace, clients, and even “business hours.”
