The promise of health insurance is simple: pay into the system now so care is easier to access when you need it. In reality, this process is far more complicated for many people. Premiums keep rising, approvals take time, and reimbursement rules often shape how clinics operate behind the scenes.
Jouvonna Gray has spent years working inside that reality. As a nurse practitioner and the founder of Get Well Clinic, she has seen how the structure of insurance can affect both patient access and the day-to-day running of a medical practice.
Jouvonna built Get Well Clinic around services that many patients actively seek but often struggle to find straightforwardly: medical weight loss programs, hormone replacement therapy, and treatment for opioid use disorder. Over time, the clinics have grown into a seven-figure business with five weight-loss clinics operating under the Get Well Clinic brand.
Along the way, one challenge has stood out above the rest.
“Insurance companies are my biggest frustration in healthcare,” she says. “I say this as a client and healthcare provider. They charge these crazy monthly rates and reimburse very little.”
Her frustration is not just about cost. It is about the system that forms around insurance billing. Clinics that depend heavily on insurance must devote a surprising amount of time to documentation, claims processing, coding, and follow-ups.
In practical terms, that often means more staff focused on administration than on patient care.
Jouvonna explains that a clinic accepting insurance can require as many as five employees simply to manage the billing and paperwork process. In contrast, a clinic built around cash or self-pay services may only need two or three staff members to operate smoothly.
That difference changes the entire rhythm of the workplace. Instead of chasing approvals or correcting billing errors, staff can spend more time supporting patients and helping providers focus on treatment.
For this reason, she chose to structure most of her services differently. Today, roughly 80% of her practice operates on a cash-pay basis.
The approach is not about rejecting insurance entirely. Rather, it is about reducing the administrative weight that comes with it. When fewer layers of paperwork stand between the clinic and the patient, appointments can move faster, and decisions about care can happen more directly.
Patients often appreciate the clarity as well. Many already feel overwhelmed by insurance policies and coverage rules. A simpler payment model can make healthcare feel more transparent and predictable.
Her experience running multiple clinics has also taught her something about the business side of medicine. Efficiency matters. Even highly skilled providers struggle when they are forced to work within systems that slow everything down.
By streamlining operations, she has been able to grow Get Well Clinic while keeping the focus on practical care. At the same time, she continues to expand her broader vision. A newer project, Get Well Concierge, is designed as a premium extension of the brand that will offer more personalized consultation services. While the concept is still developing and not yet fully operational, it reflects her interest in creating more flexible ways for patients to access care.
Still, she is quick to be clear about where the foundation of the business lies.
Get Well Concierge may represent the future of the brand, but the growth of the company has been built primarily through Get Well Clinic and the services it provides every day.
According to Jouvonna Gray, healthcare does not always need to be as complicated as it has become. When clinics remove unnecessary layers and focus on the basics, listening to patients, offering clear treatment options, and keeping operations efficient, the experience of care can feel very different. And for many patients, that difference matters more than anything else.
