Keeping your Hands Clean During The Pandemic

Updated on July 6, 2020

According to one study, 4 out of 5 people don’t wash their hands after they use the bathroom.

If you know that you don’t always wash your hands or aren’t sure how to properly do it, now is the perfect time to learn how.

Keeping your hands clean and away from your face is one of the best ways to stop the spread of COVID-19. Follow these guidelines to stay safe.

When You Should Wash Your Hands

After you go to the bathroom is always a good time to wash your hands as you may have just gotten bacteria on them.

However, there are many other times that you should make sure that you wash your hands as well.

For example, you will want to wash your hands before, during, and after you are preparing any kind of food. And then you should wash them again before you eat the food.

If you’re caring for someone who you know is sick, you should wash your hands even more frequently. You never know what invisible germs are living on your hands.

If you’re changing a diaper for your child, you should wash your hands after that as well.

If you’re sick or are showing symptoms of any sickness, you should wash your hands to avoid spreading germs to other people. If you sneeze into your hands, blow your nose, or cough, wash your hands before you touch anything else.

How to Clean Them Properly

You know when to wash your hands, but how do you make sure that you wash them properly?

Make sure you get your hands wet with some clean running water. It can be warm or cold, but warm water works best. Once your hands are wet, you can apply the soap.

Make sure that you lather your hands together by rubbing them with the soap. You should be getting soap over all of your fingers. That includes the back of your hands, in between your fingers, and also underneath your nails.

Scrub them for at least twenty seconds. This may be hard to know how long it’s been, but you can try singing happy birthday twice. Other songs work as well.

After you’ve washed them, rinse your hands under the clean water. Then dry your hands on a clean towel or let them air dry.

Use Hand Sanitizer if You’re On the Go

If you don’t have access to a sink or clean running water, you could also try using hand sanitizer. Handwashing with soap and water is still the best method, but this is better than not washing them at all.

You should make sure that you get an alcohol-based sanitizer. That means that it should be made of at least 60% alcohol.

You can buy a travel-sized hand sanitizer when you’re traveling or don’t have a chance to get to a bathroom.

To use it, add a decent-sized drop of hand sanitizer onto the palm of your hand. Then make sure you rub it across the entire hand, in between your fingers, and under your nails.
