When I was growing up, my mom used to preach to my sister and I, always stay true to your roots. I knew what she meant, as we grew up solid as Lutherans in a little church in Poland, Ohio.
Staying true to my roots is very important to me in my life and career and I hope it is for you as well.
Sometimes you may feel very alone, staying true to your roots…because in our culture, being popular is, well, popular. But I believe it’s important to stay connected with your roots and not deny who you are or where you came from.
The same can be said for entrepreneurial roots. When you are focused and have laid out good plans, your business can thrive. When you invest in yourself, there is a pot at the end of the rainbow. Being an entrepreneur is not dabbling in every shiny object, but in putting down roots and nurturing what you have planted.
I believe we are all creative beings. As a creative artist, I have met some other creative artists who seem to deny their roots, not really sure of how to express who they really are because they think it won’t be popular. Here’s some homework for you…make a list of 5 artists who were true to themselves in their musical sound or brand or 5 business leaders who marched to their own drum and who didn’t give up because they weren’t the trend. Then make a list for yourself of all that is unique and true about you as a creative, as an entrepreneur or both.
Make time to study the market, understand how it works, study the competition, and remember that success leaves traces. Always be a student while staying grounded.
