New Study Shows Coffee Can Help Men Combat Erectile Dysfunction

Updated on September 26, 2021

New research has shown that drinking coffee can help combat Erectile Dysfunction (ED).

Men suffering from ED may be pleased to know that a drink so ubiquitous, it can be bought on most street corners in every city and town across the country, may be able to reduce the impact of the condition.

The new research, by Professors at the University of Texas, showed that a caffeine intake of approximately two to three cups of coffee per day was enough for respondents to be less likely to suffer from ED. Therefore, a man’s morning cup of coffee may be more of a pick-me-up than originally thought.

Dr Earim Chaudry, Medical Director at men’s health platform Manual welcomed the findings, saying; “Studies like this are hugely important in helping the medical community understand Erectile Dysfunction.

“The study also helps with the stigma some people feel about ED. There remains a taboo around the subject, despite the fact that around half of men experience it at some point in their lives*. Studies like this help to normalise the subject and get people talking openly about it.

“This is vitally important, not only for men’s mental health, but also because Erectile Dysfunction can sometimes be an indicator of other underlying health issues, such as heart disease.”

Coffee isn’t the only everyday food and drink item that can reduce the likelihood of Erectile Dysfunction. Here are five everyday store cupboard foods that can also help combat ED.

1. Honey

Honey is a prebiotic food and contains a mineral called boron, which has been linked to testosterone, libido, and sexual stamina, giving it a triple-whammy status. Pour some over your porridge in the morning, or even just add some to a piece of toast if you’re really in a rush as you head out to start your day.

2. Tomatoes

The versatile tomato is incredibly good for you as they’re rich in Vitamin C. However, more importantly for men, they also contain Lycopene, which is known to increase blood flow. In turn, increased blood flow helps combat ED by allowing the tissue in the penis to become engorged, lubricated, and aroused – vital for maintaining an erection.

3. Eggs

Eggs are rich in Vitamin B6, which is known to boost testosterone, which is key to increasing libido in men. Eggs are also high in protein, which will help with stamina and performance between the sheets. They’re so quick and easy to cook, they make a simple addition to any non-vegan diet.

4. Chillies

Studies have shown that men who regularly enjoy (or endure?) hot and spicy food containing chillies have higher than average levels of testosterone, which is important for maintaining an erection. Chillies can also help get a man in the mood for love. Capsicum – which triggers the burning sensation felt when eating a chilli – triggers endorphins and related ‘feel good’ hormones in the brain, which are also released during sex.

5. Celery

Long thought of as a health super-food, the stalk of celery contains an amino acid called Arginine, which expands the blood vessels in the body, just like Viagra does. Celery is also rich in Vitamin E, Potassium, Magnesium, Zine, and Niacin, which are all required for intercourse. And as if that’s not enough, consuming celery releases an aroma through a man’s sweat glands thanks to two steroids called androsterone and androstenol, which has been shown to attract potential mates.
