Let’s Face It

Updated on January 19, 2022

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and greeted 2022 with a feeling of renewal.

Thanks to Healthcare Business Today for the opportunity to share articles with you. This is the third article in my series “Are You A Creative?”

So, now we find ourselves in the (sometimes) cold, dreary month of January. To be honest, I have never liked January, with the unpredictable weather and the holiday let down. But, after learning the origin and meaning of the word, my attitude changed. Did you know that January is named after Janus the god of beginnings and transitions, of doors and gates?

I love this meaning and it’s exciting to think that January can be a month that is so important to the new year! And as a creative, January is a great month to think about how to face something, that in my humble opinion, can stop our creative flow before it even gets started.

FEAR.

This is a tough door to walk through for all of us, but facing the fear can help us transition to an amazing place in our lives. One of the fears that constantly stopped my creative flow was that my ideas were not good enough to share. Looking back, I realize how what a confidence drain this was on my desire and ability to collaborate.

In my last article, I talked about the importance of recognizing your own creative gifts. And now I want to encourage you to take the next step towards finding some creative joy and freedom in your own life.

As a songwriter, fear can enter through ideas, through the fear of sharing ideas with others, and create feelings of inadequacy. You don’t have to be a songwriter to have had those moments.

It’s time, let’s face it, to face some of the fears that are disabling your desire to share your own creative gifts. And here are a few ways of facing the fear that have worked for me.

It’s article participation time, so you will need 3 pieces of paper and a pencil/pen, and maybe a crayon or marker for Step Three.

Let’s go!

STEP ONE:

I would like you to take a few minutes to write down your 3 biggest fears, each on a separate piece of paper. Now, take a few minutes or longer to describe how you allow each fear to work against you. (This may actually take longer than a few minutes, but please give yourself this time.)

STEP TWO:

What are your most exciting goals? List as many as you like.

STEP THREE:

Now, describe how your biggest fear sabotages your ability to create. (You may want to write a letter to yourself, create a poem, or draw a picture describing this.)

You are on the road to having a better understanding of yourself and your creative gifts. I was inspired to create my online course “Spark Your Creativity: The Steps to a Successful Creative Journey,” because of all the clients I coached who were impacted by fear and wasted valuable time worrying about their own worth.

I would love to hear from you and how facing fears about your own creative gifts is encouraging to you and others.

Whatever you do, stay inspired!
