How to Make a Small Space Look Large

Updated on February 13, 2019

The size of an apartment does not matter just as long as you know how to maximize on the space you have. The same thought process you’d have put into decorating a larger place is the same thought process you should put into decorating your small space.

What are some of the things you should consider when setting up your space?

This will be your home.

At the end of a long day, when you come home from your job as a secretary, cosmetic consultant, real estate agent among others, you want a place you can feel at home in, a space that welcomes you and gives you rest.   If you are decorating your home, you need to make it as comfortable as possible so that you can look forward to going home at the end of every day.

Bring in natural light.

Forget about the heavy curtains and use shears that allow natural light in.  Light makes a room look larger, creates an impression of warmth makes it very inviting. Invest in additional lighting so that you always have a well-lit room even at night.

 Furniture arrangement.

If you have heavy furniture, back them up against the wall and not the center of the room. Chunky furniture takes up a lot of space and you do not want to clutter the by having them in the middle of the room.

Be wise in the type of furniture you buy.

Have furniture that can provide multi-functionality for example your coffee table can become storage space, your sofa should be able to convert into a bed in case you have visitors over, your ottoman can provide additional storage for linen or books, and your desk and chairs should be able to fold away in case you require more space.

Use vertical space to give an illusion of depth. For example, your bookshelf should run from bottom to top and not from side to side.  Hang your curtain close to the ceiling because it gives an illusion of height.

Mirror mirror on the wall.

Mirrors are a great way to give the illusion of space, as well as to reflect light thus giving the room a larger, brighter feeling. Get mirrors with tastefully done frames so that they add to the ambiance of the place.

Get rid of things you do not use.

A small space will force you to get rid of things you do not use. Having a few things in the room will help you create a lot of space that you can utilize.

Use color.

Bright colors will make the room look lively and attractive. Even if you prefer muted colors on your walls, you can use pillows, throws, or bright carpets to bring some color into the room.

Large rugs are also a great idea when you want to make a small room look big. It is all about perception, if you see a big rug in a small room, you immediately think that the room is big.
