First Time Expecting? Here are Some First Trimester Tips

Updated on September 7, 2021

The joy of expecting is overwhelming. Your home dynamic is shifting, and you are moving from a couple to a family. That little one is hopefully going to bring so much joy, and in 9 months your life is going to be vastly different. What about now though? Should you be changing habits already?

If it’s your first pregnancy, you may be concerned about proper care and steps for these first few months. There are some things you could do to start making your health and life a bit easier down the road. The following are five things to keep in mind.

1. Keep the News To a Small Circle

A special time is often broadcast quickly, especially in today’s world of social media. Pregnancies, though, can be emotional, and if anything happens, the loss is often quite devastating. Doctors recommend keeping the news to your inner circle for at least the first few weeks.

Verify it with pregnancy testing in Santa Rosa because some early tests could give a false negative. A doctor’s exam is also good, checking your body for signs of strength. During early visits, the heartbeat may be assessed too to determine the viability of the fetus.

Plan a big reveal for after the first major ultrasound. That is one way to feel a bit easier and really party it up!

2. Increase Vitamin Intake

As the baby grows, you and your child need the proper nutrition. Try to eat a consistently healthy diet, giving into cravings when necessary. Think of colorful plates, chocked full of antioxidants and vitamins.

The baby is going to start pulling more and more from you, so you may invest in a good prenatal pill to ensure that you both continue to get the nourishment needed.

3. Interview OBGYNs

Consider your birth plan and philosophy. Do you think you want pain meds? Do you want to have a doula? Are you interested in breathing techniques or water births? Be sure your current doctor is okay with these ideas, supporting you in your journey.

If there is disagreement, you may switch providers. Ask friends for recommendations, read reviews and set up appointments. It’s okay to interview an OBGYN for this major life event.

4. Stock Up on Anti-Nasaeu Meds

Many women experience morning sickness during the first trimester. Ask for natural remedies such as fresh ginger candies. If it gets to be unbearable, schedule an appointment with your doctor, discussing medical options. It’s important to try and get it under control to avoid dehydration and malnourishment.

5. Keep Walking

Some women aren’t sure about exercising during pregnancy. If you are currently very active, talk with your physician about what is safe for you. In general, many medical professionals encourage movement as long as it isn’t unusual or intense. Walking, for instance, may help with water retention and manage those extra calories from the cravings. Try to make your exercise routine consistent as well.

The first nine weeks may be a bit nerving for a new mom-to-be. Start thinking about your pregnancy and delivery plan, and work with the medical advisors to maintain your health.
