A Look at the Facts: 6 Rhinoplasty Myths Explained

Updated on October 7, 2022

When you decide you want to change your look, or a doctor tells you there is an issue with your breathing, you will need to contact a specialist. Sometimes an Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist can help you determine if you are eligible for a nose job, based on a physical condition. If you are looking for cosmetic adjustments, you will need to get a Rhinoplasty from a top facial plastic surgeon.

Before you arrange a consultation for Rhinoplasty, here are 6 myths about the procedure explained:

1. Rhinoplasty is a Simple Procedure

This is not always true, especially if you have something like a deviated septum or a sizable “bump” on your nose. Whenever your nasal passages are changed, even with the most minuscule change, the form and function of your breathing can and will change.

2. Any Surgeon Can Perform Rhinoplasty

This is not true. You will want to find a certified plastic surgeon that specializes in Rhinoplasty. The reason is that the nose is a misunderstood and complex part of the body, although it looks rather simple from the outside. A certified plastic surgeon will have performed a certain number of successful Rhinoplasty surgeries before receiving their certificate. This will ensure that the person performing your surgery is experienced.

3. Rhinoplasty is Expensive

There are several different procedures under the name of Rhioplasty and therefore, they are not all created equal, nor are they all the same price. You will need to speak with your surgeon before a procedure is done, so that you know exactly what he or she is planning on doing to your nose. Then someone from the surgeon’s office staff will talk to you about the price.

4. Insurance Does Not Cover Rhinoplasty

This is not always the case. Each insurance company and policy is different and some cover this type of procedure if it is deemed medically necessary. There should be someone in the surgeon’s office who has experience with all the different types of insurance companies and what procedures they will and won’t pay for. This person may also have financing options available for those whose insurance is not going to cover such a procedure.

5. My Face Will Look Different

This myth, along with thinking your nose will look “fake” is simply not true. The advancements in technology and cosmetic surgeries are miles above where they were only a decade ago. Plastic surgeons are able to create a new nose that looks more natural to your face than even the nose you were born with.

6. Rhinoplasty is Painful

Like all surgeries, there is a certain amount of pain involved; however, with the right numbing medications,  or anesthesia, you will feel a lot less of the procedure as you might think. The recovery could be somewhat painful,  but no more than a dental procedure. It will be more of a discomfort than pain. You may experience black eyes for a few days after a procedure like Rhinoplasty, but you will no doubt be able to return to your normal everyday activities.

The best way to understand what Rhinoplasty is all about is to have a consultation with a certified surgeon and ask lots of questions.
